Post-Harvest Processing

Valerian Extract Powder roots are air-dried at 40-45°C to prevent essential oil volatilization. Strict moisture control (≤9%) and low-temperature storage ensure raw material integrity before extraction.

Solubility Profile

The standard alcohol-extracted powder is soluble in ethanol, propylene glycol and hot water, but gives hazy suspensions in cold water. We offer our water-soluble grade encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin for beverage applications, which dissolves rapidly in cold water without any oil separation.

Thermal stability

Stable in the long term at 60°C. Significant degradation of valerienic acid and loss of volatile oil was seen at temperatures over 80°C. Always include into formulations during cool-down periods.

pH Tolerence

Optimal stability at pH 4.7-7.4. Acid or alkaline conditions are quite harsh on iridoid structures and give rise to greasy precipitates.

Storage Conditions

Store in vacuum-sealed, light-proof aluminium foil packaging at ≤25°C and <60% relative humidity for 24 months shelf life.

Raw Material Preparation

Roots are authenticated by HPTLC profiling. Remove dirt, insects and damaged rhizomes. Organic compounds are handled separately to avoid conventional contamination. Roots are dried at low temperatures and ground to 20-30 mesh.

Methods of Extraction

Water Extraction (4:1 Crude): Decoction at 70-75°C with filtered water for 2 cycles, followed by high pressure pressing.

Ethanol Extraction (10:1, Standardised) Closed loop 50% food grade ethanol refluxed at 45-55°C for 3 cycles. Ethanol collected and re-used.

Purification and Refinement

Multi-stage filtering eliminates fibres, resinous pollutants and gums. For standardised grades, Valerienic Acid is concentrated by gradient elution from polysaccharides and pigments removed using D101 macroporous resin chromatography.

Technology of drying

Spray drying of typical powders (inlet 145-155°C, output not more than 72°C). Vacuum drying at 42-48°C for high purity grades to retain volatile oils. Encapsulation via complexation with beta-cyclodextrin and spray drying.

Final Processing

Powders are sieved (80-200 mesh), blended in 3D mixers for batch uniformity, and vacuum-sealed in light-protected packaging with desiccants.

A: 4:1 is more impure which is good for mixed recipes. 10:1 offers a good cost/performance ratio of ordinary capsules. Professional supplements are standardised to 0.8% version to enable consistent dosage.
